Well it's official--We're going to Delta Junction, Alaska when Victor leaves for Iraq next month to live near my sister Sam. We are only taking what will fit in our van and the rest will be sold, given away or thrown in the garbage.
We're driving the Alaskan Highway. We'll stop for a few days in Utah, a few days in Montana and then driving to Alaska. The kids are so excited. The other day I asked Josh if he wanted to go to the park and he said, "No, I want to go to Alaska."
I have been hauling around boxes of stuff since I left home for college--that's a 10 year collection!
I knew it would feel good to be rid of some stuff but I didn't know it would feel this good. I've gotten things taken care of that have been on my list to do for years and it's great to get it behind me.
I scanned all my pictures and documents and threw away boxes of "scrapbook" pictures! I'm trying to think of what my children and grandchild would actually want to see and it's not an entire scrapbook dedicated to my 8th grade trip to New York. It felt great to pick two or three pictures with a journal entry and through the whole book in the garbage.
I do not want my kids to pack around all my stuff for the rest of their lives. My goal is to eventually scan pictures and journal entries into a single book.
So we are taking Thoreau's advice to "Simplify, Simplify, Simplify."

Good for you for simplifying! I have tons of stuff I need to go through and either toss or do something productive with...mostly toss.
Good luck in Delta Junction! That ought to be a fun long drive! :)

How long will you be there? Does that mean you're not coming to my part of the country? Have fun and tell your sister hello!
